stretch out your bouquet’s lifespan
Fresh flowers change a room—and a mood. The flip side? Watching them wilt too fast. I used to just plop them in water with the little packet and hope for the best. If you’re like me and want your bouquet to last, here’s a simple routine inspired by floral artist Ryan Norville of Oat Cinnamon (oatcinnamon.com).
Buy smart (at the shop)
Leaves: bright and perky—skip browning.
Stems: firm (not soggy); natural color—no black/brown.
Shake test: a gentle shake shouldn’t rain leaves.
Prep at home (day 1)
Trim stems at a 45° angle.
Strip lower leaves so none sit below the waterline.
Food + cold water: use the florist packet in clean, cool water.
Daily care (so they actually last)
Refresh water daily or at least every other day; add more food.
Re-trim ends every 2–3 days.
Placement: cool spot, away from direct heat/vents and ripening fruit.
My extra tip
Morning light helps—if your space is dim, give them a softly lit perch for a few hours.
I’ve started doing this and I’m enjoying my bouquets much longer. Want help styling blooms with your room’s palette?
